First United Methodist Church
Grant School has been adopted!!! The First United Methodist Church in Norfolk has formed a partnership with our school. In the summer of 2014, the Great Plains Annual Conference of the Methodist Churches passed a resolution in support of educational partnerships within communities. The resolution states that the church recognizes that public schools are facing budget cuts and other challenges each year which force educators to do more with less. The goal of the partnership is to improve the educational environment, to support efforts to reduce poverty, and to improve social and physical well being for all students. The mission of our partnership with First United Methodist Church is to mentor and support Grant School’s staff and students to help our children mature into healthy, well-adjusted young adults who are equipped to contribute to the work force or to have successful college careers.
The First United Methodist congregation has provided our school with money so that each student could select a book from the December and May Scholastic book club orders. The staff took the orders and when the books arrived, church representatives came to school and put book plates in each book to remind the children that that book was a gift from our new community partner. Church donors were then invited into the school to help with the presentation of the books to the students. What a terrific opportunity for our children to take the book home, share it, and enjoy reading with their families at home! Our students are also seeing the benefit and satisfaction that comes from community service and helping other people through this partnership.
The United Methodist Church has shown us that possibilities are endless! Second semester the church provided the staff with cookies at conferences and an appreciation meal during staff appreciation month. Volunteers have been assigned to each classroom and a garden area has been tilled by a church member for our first grade sunflower garden. This summer we have had church volunteers come into Grant to paint and redecorate our teachers' lounge. We are blessed to have this partnership at Grant.
Holiday Gift Partnerships
At the holiday time, the First Presbyterian Church and Northeast Community College requests that Grant offer them names of families who could benefit from a bit of holiday cheer. After the families have given permission, the community partners then provide the children in the families with wrapped holiday gifts and/or gift cards to local stores. The families are so very thankful for the assistance and we very much appreciate the kindness of these community friends.
